A birthday celebration would not be complete without a party. Ever since the calendar was invented, people were already throwing parties in order to ward off evil spirits that might be attracted to the birthday celebrant. Although today’s people celebrate birthdays just for the fun of it, you’ve got to admit, having to be the person who blows the candles and gets to open gifts makes you feel special. So if you want to make another person feel special and important on his or her date of birth, be it a loving husband or a cute baby, then here are some tips and tricks on how to make that day a really fun occasion.

The first birthdays that we celebrate are, what else, first birthdays. Although not a single one of us remembers what happened on that day, most of us usually have the photographs that prove we were indeed made to blow the candles – even if we couldn’t – on our birthday cakes. So if your child’s first birthday is coming up, you have to make it extra special. Even if you think that your baby will not remember what took place on that fateful day, at least you’ll have pictures to show that child – who will one day be a grownup – of what went on during his/her baby years.

The first thing that you should remember is that you should have a kid friendly menu that includes food that children and the kids at heart like to eat. Examples of these foods are hotdogs, burgers, lasagna/spaghetti, fried chicken, ice cream, sandwiches, muffins, chocolate, pizza etc. In short, all the good stuff those health-conscious mothers try so hard to avoid. So if you’re one of those mothers who want to please their kids’ taste buds but want them to be healthy at the same time, then maybe you can make a compromise. For example, you can make healthy carrot cake frosted with low fat whipped cream and then topped with first birthday party candles. In other words, you just have to do your homework and try substituting some fattening ingredients like oil, with applesauce. The little things really count.

The second tip is that you should really be prepared. If you’re having a lot of people over, then you should have a checklist, even if it’s just a mental checklist of all the things you need. This includes the simple stuff like enough paper napkins, extra food (just in case), enough chairs to sit on and of course the birthday cake and the birthday party candles on top. You wouldn’t want the birthday celebrant to mope around because there aren’t candles on his or her cake, now would you?

The third and last thing that you should remember is that if you are throwing parties why not go all out and have a theme? It could be a princess birthday party if it’s for a girl or if it’s for an adult, then maybe you can have an Asian party, complete with sushi, chopsticks, dim sum, paper lanterns and Asian inspired cake complete with Chinese character party candles. You can even have a karaoke contest and vote on who gets to win a special prize like, a kiss from the birthday celebrant. Or if the party is meant for a guy, then you can have a sports themed party. The menu will include food like burgers, hotdogs, steak etc.

And if you want to go easy on the dessert, then maybe you can have a pie instead of a cake. You can just add sports candles on top of the pie to make it look like a cake. Just remember that the party is more personal and fun to plan if it has a theme that the celebrant is really into, like Barbie or maybe it’s Barney. So long as the themed party has all the right ingredients like the cake and your chosen theme party candles, then you’ll have nothing else to worry about except maybe if the food will last.
